I am working among the Muslims in Mombasa, Kenya, where the population is predominantly
Muslim. During my time in Mombasa I observe Christians rubbing shoulders with other
faiths, but have very little to do with each other. I feel that there is a need to develop
a bridge model for reaching Muslims with special reference to the Muslim's felt need for
power for protection. My desire is to develop new ways to reach Muslims in this area
and then to train other Kenyans to do the same.
I am an ordained minister in the Anglican Church of Kenya. I have served in the
diocese of Mombasa for the last seventeen years, nine of which I served as the principal
of Bishop Hannington Institute, Mombasa, preparing ordinands for full time ministry.
My Christian mission began well back in 1972 soon after my conversion. My new
experience in Christ, I can say changed my inner being, thus shaping my values, attitudes,
motives and above all my behavior. I new I had a vocation to fulfil, that is serving my
Lord. I was led into a life of prayer and fasting. I became involved very much with the
School Christian Union in leading services and preaching. Later, I had a call to serve as
a full time minister in the church, so I joined the ordained ministry. After ordination I
have served in various capacities in the diocese of Mombasa, Kenya. Recently, while in
USA, a member of our church at the St. Luke's of the Mountains invited me to attend their
Kewanis club of La Canada-am where the Rev. Kevin Higgins was giving a lecture. It was
after this lecture that I learned Kevin shared the same sentiments with me. I got
interested with what Global Teams was doing. Thus applied to be considered as a short
term missionary in Kenya.
One of the challenges that I face is raising my own funds for my field research. Asking
is a bit hard for me. In my culture it is impolite to ask people for money directly.
Rather, I narrate a story expressing need and leave it to for one to decide whether to
help or not. Another challenge that I am facing is that after the September 11 2001,
some Muslims are suspicious of Christians researching about them and especially Christians
from the USA.
At the moment I am collecting data for my field research on Muslim use of Hirizi charms
while working to complete my doctoral studies.
